[MIKE SIMON:

hey everyone I'm Mike Simon I'm from PC
00:01
world and I'm here at Google i/o where
00:03
they just introduced a new preview of
00:06
Android P and I got a phone running it
00:08
now and I'm gonna take you through the
00:09
best feature

[ADAM PATRICK MURRAY]

it's right here nice well
00:15
what are you gonna show us first

[SIMON] so
00:17
there's three that are three features
00:19
that are kind of new the first thing
00:21
you'll notice when you swipe down for
00:22
the notification shade looks different
00:24
we got some rounded corners and some
00:27
some more definition between the quick
00:28
settings and the notification panel
00:30
quick settings are now a little bit more
00:33
pronounced as there's blue when they're
00:35
on there they're clear when they're off
00:37
and you can just like before swipe down
00:39
and get a list

[MURRAY] what about the over here
00:42
like the other screen

[SIMON] click the settings
00:45
you got there
00:46
oops sorry oh that was that was a
00:48
mistake well we'll get to later

[MURRAY] oh yeah
00:55
is there any new settings

[SIMON] because that
00:57
looks the same and
ya know they look all about
01:02
the same okay as far as the options it's
01:05
mostly just a visual change mostly just
01:07
a visual change it's a little cleaner
01:08
and a little clearer to see what's on
01:10
and what's off yeah
01:13
so a couple of changes they made to this
01:17
the Do Not Disturb button right now it's
01:21
off so you can see all of your
01:22
notifications that turn it on and bang
01:24
they're gone

[MURRAY] so don't get any notifications
01:27

SIMON] right if you get these three
01:28
buttons here they set up this too to
01:31
show you notifications so if you press
01:32
one of those it sends one but you're not
01:34
gonna see it until you turn that off and
01:36
there's your new one of those is new it
01:39
says now I'm not sure which one so if
01:41
everything's still there everything is I
01:43
can't see it so it's like just shuts
01:46
down the phone also a new setting when
01:49
you put your phone down face down and
01:52
automatically turns that on so you
01:54
you know won't be kind of inundated with
01:56
messages because if they're just
01:57
assuming if you put it facedown you
01:58
don't want to look at your phone so
02:00
that's that's just so just a fun little
02:01
setting I like that so okay now I just
02:06
did that by accident but that's another
02:07
new setting of the volume you put it up
02:11
and it automatically controls the media
02:13
first oh perfect so you won't be
02:15
lowering and raising your ringtone but
02:17
you don't want to do it which is
02:19
something that we do all the time but
02:21
what if you want to do change your
02:22
ringtone was a little setting button
02:24
click on that gear and there you go
02:25
you've still got your three options ring
02:28
but when you see if you can see media is
02:30
the one that's that's the primary one
02:33
the high-level one so you know nine
02:35
times out of ten probably nine and a
02:37
half times out of ten you want to lower
02:38
the volume on a video or something so
02:40
just press down and now you're
02:42
controlling so that that's awesome
02:44
so you can't get the three sliders in
02:46
the notification shade anymore huh I
02:47
don't see it yeah and I don't see it he
02:50
really you get you gotta press that okay
02:53
go into the sound settings but at least
02:54
it looks like for phone there's at
02:56
least a toggle between vibrate bring it
03:00
up and then there's a toggle right right
03:02
up here you can click on vibrate click
03:03
that for no and that's the regular
03:06
ringer okay also if you get though
03:07
there's a there's a new little um
03:09
gesture if you want to just turn on
03:12
silent mode you hold down the volume
03:14
down and the power button or power-ups
03:18
volume up in power and that turns on
03:24
vibrate mode so that says if have
03:26
volume on and you just want to quickly
03:27
turn it off instead of a mute switch
03:29
like like the iPhone has and 1 Plus
03:31
Has, so you just press volume up and
03:34
power I think it let me let me just
03:36
double check their volume down in power
03:40

[murray] so okay so it still isn't
03:44
volume down and power screen screen show
03:46

[simon]

yeah um I still hold it a little bit
03:49
longer
a let me just try that
03:55
one more time
03:55
hold on no you're right it is oh there
04:03
you go
04:03
oh call your mom and volume down in
04:05
Screen still it's a great job 04:07
you want to keep sliding out though or
04:09
you got to get used to I gotta get used
04:10
to this but I use it on the
04:12
iPhone 10 and as you I'll show you in a
04:14
minute it's quite a bit different from
04:15
the way the two things function it's
04:18
still a button yeah so this we're on if
04:21
you use an iPhone 10 it has a home
04:23
indicator you can't press it you have to
04:25
gesture this is still a button if you
04:27
want assistant you hold it down and you
04:30
know it brings up that and if you want
04:32
to go back to the home you press that 4:34
it brings up brings goes back to that as
04:35
[murray]

well it looks like it still has a
04:37
contextual back when you when you need
04:40
it
[simon]
when you need it yes so and sure so
04:42
if you're in Chrome or something to get
04:44
back here

[murray]

which is something you don't
04:45
get on the iphone

04:47
[simon]

yeah it will bring up the
04:49
back button but the rcents button is off
04:52
and these are all customizable there's a
04:54
there's a preference pane and
04:57
settings where you can turn on the the
04:59
the new gesture based navigation if you
05:02
don't like e you can go back to the old
05:03
one with the recent button the back
05:04
button and the regular circular homeland
05:07
oh nice so this is the new home you know
05:11
this this new elongated home button so
05:14
if you want to get to your recent apps
05:16
there's no more recents the square
05:18
button so you kind of just push up on it just once
05:21
it brings you right
to your recent apps
05:27
which are now horizontal instead of
05:29
vertical and you just scroll through you
05:32
pick the one you want and there you go
05:33
to get back to home you just press the
05:37
button like you did before
05:38
[murray] so now you have to do two swipes to do
05:41
to get to

[simon] to get to the rest of your
05:43
apps you do it again to get to the app drawer
05:46
yeah one cool feature they have on this
05:49
is you can select text by long-pressing
05:51
so if you just want to grab a piece of
05:54
text copy it and then move it over to
05:56
here you can use those are actually
05:59
active windows so it's not just like a
06:02
snapshot there's a live windows where
06:04
you can kind of click in there grab some
06:06
text or search for something or whatever
06:08
you need to do and you know
06:10
without jumping back and forth between
06:12
all these apps

[murray]

what
06:13
about the maybe try to go all the
06:15
way back to something that's out of RAM
06:16
maybe because I wonder if it has to be
06:19
loaded in RAM for that\

[simon]

looks like it
06:20
because you can't I don't see
06:24
yeah cuz if you try to if you try to
06:30
actually move the screen okay so well
06:33
that that's the new quitting the same as
06:35
before you just swipe up yeah but yeah
06:38
you can't get down anywhere so it's just
06:40
kind of a it's like a kind of like a
06:44
dynamic screenshot almost interesting
06:46
yeah so you know you can you can search
06:50
and I'm gonna bring up the oh just bring
06:52
up the Google app and search what you're
06:53
looking for there

[murray]

what about the quick
06:56
look at the the reason it's a little
06:57
swipe you thing
06:58
[simon]

oh yeah right that's that's cool so if
07:01
you're on like if you're in in chrome
07:03
and you're looking at something if you
07:05
swipe it's the decison swiping it up
07:07
it's five to the right into the left you
07:10
can actually just quickly scroll through
07:12
your things and when you let go it
07:14
brings up what you are looking for so
07:16
instead of doing this that and throwing
07:19
just quickly zoom zoom into an app that
07:21
you that you want grab it and go it

[murray]

does
07:24
it only go back the last like five so
07:27
that look like a limitation like I'm not
07:29
sure let's see how many are open your
07:30
messages so if you go one two three okay
07:36
it looks like it's oh no no it's it's
07:38
all there okay okay so if you just
07:43
interesting so you just you just have to
07:45
do it as if you're doing a mouse so like
07:49
like when you reach the end you just
07:51
kind of like little bit there yeah
07:53
interesting but it does it does go to
07:55
all of them and as soon as you let go it
07:58
brings it in to where you were

[murray] so what
08:01
do you think you excited about the these
08:02
Features

[simon] yeah I dig gesture navigation I
08:05
mean on the iPhone 10 it was one of my
08:06
favorite features I always I never liked
08:10
the physical home buttons so I you know
08:12
gestures are something that I dig I wish
08:16
it would have come earlier because
08:17
Android phones haven't had buttons for a
08:19
long time just seemed a little overdue
08:21
very true but I'll take it now rather
08:23
than never so yeah it's cool and then
08:25
you're gonna be doing some more in-depth
08:26
looks at it well yeah I'm gonna I'm
08:28
gonna definitely take a look at it
08:29
compared to the iPhone 10 see how things
08:31
are different what you can customize
08:33
what you can customize but I definitely
08:35
seems like a great step in a direction
08:37
that even if it's overdue it's it's the
08:40
right one awesome
08:43
