HTC Vive Pro review

The HTC Vive Pro pushes VR forward, but at $800 for the headset alone it's likely to remain niche.

00:01
hey welcome PC world I'm Hayden Dingman
00:04
and I am here today with the vive pro
00:07
it's not really a vive the 2.0 but that's kind
00:10
of what I've been thinking of it as at
00:12
home it's the first upgrade or the first
00:15
headset upgrade we've had in two years
00:16
since the original vive and rift came
00:19
out in 2016 so yeah first thing as you
00:23
can see it's now blue I can't really say
00:26
I'm a big fan I think I like the dark,
00:30
black or sleek black a look of the
00:32
original I don't know, it’s kind of -- it's
00:35
not as bad in person as it is in their
00:37
renders but it's still very blue but
00:40
anyways aside from that you can see a
00:42
lot of the the improvements to this have
00:45
actually been folded in from last year's
00:47
deluxe audio strap which we also put a
00:50
review of up on the site last year that
00:53
was the first time that we had this
00:55
rigid plastic headband and also the
00:57
built-in headphones so a lot of those
01:00
improvements carry over into the vive
01:02
pro from the start you can just snap
01:04
these headphones down on your ears and
01:07
now adjustment instead of being like a
01:09
crazy three strap system as the bicycle
01:12
wheel system which is used on hololens
01:14
also so you just turn this knob in the
01:17
back
01:17
very easy slip the thing on and off in
01:21
about 10 seconds now which is definitely
01:22
not the case with the old model the big
01:26
difference from last year's deluxe audio
01:28
strap is there's also now much more of a
01:30
counterweight here on the back you can
01:32
see it's pretty sizable piece of plastic
01:35
good and bad things here first of all
01:37
the headset feels a lot lighter so
01:39
before if you had the original vive or
01:42
the rift even, that headset would
01:46
kind of pull down on your face a lot
01:47
there wasn't really anything to offset
01:50
that and that was especially bad on the
01:52
vive because they only had elastic
01:54
straps it really would just hang heavy
01:56
and if you looked down you would always
01:58
get this thing where the headset pulled
02:00
down towards the ground; this now solves
02:03
both those problems the rigid plastic
02:05
keeps it up against your face and also
02:07
the counterweight offsets some of the
02:09
weight in the back so I think this is
02:10
actually technically heavier overall
02:12
than the
02:13
original vive but it feels lighter but the one
02:15
thing I have noticed and this is sort of
02:17
a niche problem because I have a very
02:19
tall gamer chair with a headrest that
02:22
comes up above my head but because of
02:24
that seated VR with the vive pro is
02:28
actually much more annoying this little
02:31
piece of plastic as small as it looks
02:33
actually pushes my head forward from my
02:35
chair yeah I think that if you have a
02:37
tall chair this new vive pro model is
02:39
gonna be a little bit awkward it's clear
02:41
htc you really just wants to focus on
02:43
the the room scale environment which is
02:45
what distinguishes the vive still from
02:47
everybody else they still have the best
02:49
tracking in my opinion but for those of
02:52
you who are using seated VR still a
02:54
bit of an issue; the vibe control box is
02:56
also I think worth talking about;
02:58
or the vive pro control box, they did
03:00
redesign this so the old model had on
03:03
the back USB DisplayPort power and an
03:07
HDMI that HDMI port has been taken off
03:10
now so you can see it's only gonna be
03:12
main display port on the back which is
03:15
fine most graphics cards have more
03:17
DisplayPort capabilities and they do
03:19
HDMI anyway on the front they've also
03:21
redesigned the cable they have a custom
03:25
port now it's very I don't know large
03:29
but that replaces both the original
03:31
ribbon cable which most people probably
03:33
got rid of I think they stopped sending
03:36
vives out with the original ribbon cable
03:38
like two months in but if you have that
03:41
this is a much sleeker cable it also
03:44
replaces the three-in-one cable which is
03:45
the solution they had before that one of
03:47
course was I think HDMI power and USB on
03:51
the front also this one is just the
03:54
single port plug it in it's a little bit
03:57
finicky but it goes straight in and then
03:58
you also have a power button on the
04:00
front which you're gonna press to turn
04:02
it on and you'll have a little green
04:04
light illuminate there I don't know many
04:07
people are shutting the vibe off in
04:09
between sessions but I guess if that's
04:10
something that concerns you you can do
04:12
it for me it's been only a thing that I
04:14
use when I need to reset the hardware
04:17
but yeah otherwise a much sleeker box
04:20
than before I think but
04:22
biggest improvement by far is actually
04:24
the resolution which is the thing that
04:26
we can't really demonstrate to you here
04:28
but the original vive had a resolution
04:30
of 2160 by 1200 the vive Pro jumps that
04:33
up to 2880 by 1600 which if I remember
04:37
from the HTC marketing materials I think
04:40
is a 73 percent increase in pixel
04:43
density it's still not quite enough to
04:45
get rid of the the screen door effect
04:47
but it gets a lot closer I've been using
04:50
it at home for a variety of demos
04:53
including just the Steam home
04:55
environment and the thing that I've
04:56
noticed the most difference in is text
04:58
which should not come as a surprise
05:00
anyway with the original vive the 2160
05:04
by 1200 seemed like a great resolution
05:05
at the time or at least was much better
05:07
than what we had had with the dk2 and
05:10
those earlier rift prototypes but text
05:14
was always still pretty blurry unless
05:15
you did like size 72 point font nowadays
05:20
with the Vive Pro I've noticed I can read
05:22
all of those Steam home menus which
05:24
are especially small a lot of that text
05:27
is at probably 12-point font what you
05:29
used to look very blurry and you had to
05:31
squint to read it all that looks crystal
05:33
clear now and games I don't notice it as
05:36
much games already looked pretty good on
05:38
the vive -- some of the lines
05:41
look a little crisper some of the
05:43
backgrounds look a little less blurry
05:45
but overall you can still tell oh I can
05:47
see the pixels a little I think that
05:50
we'll still need at least one more jump
05:52
before we fully get rid of the screen
05:54
door effect but at that point we're
05:55
talking about 4k at 90 frames per second
05:58
which is probably a few years down the
06:01
line unless Foveated rendering becomes
06:04
more of a solution than it is right now
06:08
but yeah it's a pretty nice headset the
06:10
main problem is the price $800 for just
06:14
the headset that doesn't include you
06:17
know the base stations or the
06:19
controllers I'm gonna guess it's gonna
06:21
be $1,000 for the whole package the $800
06:24
deal seems to be aimed at people who
06:26
already have a vive and to be honest I
06:28
think that's who the vive pro is
06:30
primarily aimed at to begin with it's
06:32
the enthusiast it's the person that has
06:34
really wondered
06:35
where we're gonna get our next our
06:37
upgrade from that's me I remember you
06:41
know back in the dk1 days it felt like a
06:44
year later we had the dk2 and then a
06:46
year after that we were seeing the vive
06:47
and it felt like these upgrades were
06:49
coming so fast at the time and then it's
06:51
been two years since we got the consumer
06:53
versions there hasn't really been a lot
06:54
going on for the people that have been
06:57
wondering like hey when are we gonna see
06:58
a higher res hmd this is that but it
07:02
doesn't really feel like a vive 2 - I
07:04
think they're smart to not really call
07:06
this a second-generation piece of
07:08
hardware it's more of like a vive 1.5 vive Pro
07:12
is a pretty apt name I guess but it's
07:15
expensive and so it's also gonna be a
07:17
pretty niche item I think most people
07:19
are gonna wanna stick with the original
07:20
vive which is the $500 bucks and that
07:23
comes with the base stations and the
07:25
controllers 800 for just the headset or
07:28
a thousand so twice as much for a little
07:30
full kit that seems a bit outrageous but
07:34
we will keep you updated obviously
07:36
there's a lot more stuff to come this
07:38
year in VR oculus the Santa Cruz
07:40
prototype we saw at oculus connect last
07:42
year that's expected to come maybe later
07:45
this year or early next year so there's
07:48
more stuff coming but for now this is it
07:50
vive pro 800 dollars and it's blue
07:55
