Alibaba Singles Day sales skyrocket

Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, sold $17.79 billion worth of goods in just 24-hours during its Single's Day sale on November 11th.

Chinese e-commerce company, Alibaba, has once again smashed sales records during its one-day online global shopping festival

The festival took place November, 11th, or “Singles Day” as represented by the numeric date of 11/11

It began in 2009 as a way to persuade millions of single Chinese to buy gifts for themselves

This year, Alibaba sold RMB 120.7 billion ($17.79 billion) worth of goods in just 24-hours, a 32% jump from last year

RMB 98.97 billion ($14.6 billion) of the goods sold were purchased on mobile devices alone!

Entertainment and commerce merged into one as consumers had a chance to make purchases from big name stores like Macy’s in a VR environment

Augmented reality also played a role as consumers used their smartphones to track down Tmall’s cat mascot into real-world retailers, like Starbucks, for special promotions

According to Alibaba, shoppers logged on from almost every country in the world, with thousands of international brands participating
