A new smart home system is betting that you’ll like using its tablet more than your own.
Fantem’s Oomi Connect Home System doesn’t need your tablet or smartphone, rather it uses The Touch, its own 7-inch touchscreen tablet. It’s supposed to make the system easier to use and connect.
Once you connect the system using the company's Touch tablet, you can control it using your smartphone when you are away from home.
The Oomi cube is the heart of the system and its paired to the tablet by tapping the two devices together. The cube is the hub for Oomi and communicates with other devices via Wifi, Bluetooth and Z Wave.
The Cube has a night-vision camera, environmental sensor, and IR blaster to control home-theater systems.
Fantem also developed a smart plug, a smart LED light bulb, a multi-sensor monitor, and an audio/video streamer that can be controlled by the Oomi Touch. The multi sensor can monitor light, motion, temperature, humidity, UV, and vibration.
All the devices on the Oomi network are connected over a mesh network, which means that devices that might typically be out of the range of your Wifi router can connect to the next closest Oomi device.
The system will be out in October. The package with a cube, tablet and one accessory is 280 dollars.
