IFA 2014: Fraunhofer brings 4K TV to tablets

Germany's Fraunhofer Institute is bringing 4K TV content to second screens using tablets almost like magnifying glasses. The prototype project on show at the IFA consumer electronics in Berlin is called Ultra HD Zoom and uses a 4K TV and 3 tablets.

In this case we used content from a football game and maybe you can use this one to zoom in and watch a special player.

In the demonstration the recorded soccer match played on a Sony TV and streamed wirelessly to three iPads. Each tablet could independently zoom in on a different part of the game, represented by the three colored rectangles on the screen. Because 4K resolution is 4 times full HD, the tablets can zoom in to a point without much impact on picture quality.

The researchers said there are no immediate plans for commercialization as they need to conduct further tests with live broadcasts and figure out whether or not audiences would use the technology.
